Rental cars allow you to control your daily activities and to see parts of Grenada you didn't even know existed. But drivers should always be aware of road rules and unusual driving conditions before setting out on an island road trip.
If you plan to venture away from the popular southwestern region to visit sites such as the Grand Étang National Park or the Grenville Nutmeg Processing Station, you may wish to rent a car. Rates start at approximately $50(USD) per day and go up to $75(USD), but taxi fares can also add up quickly if you're touring extensively. Keeping a car for a minimum of three days or by the week will usually result in lower daily rates. In the high season and in July and August, rentals must be secured for at least three days.
Some rental car agencies will rent to travelers who are 21 years old, but most require drivers to be at least 25. Most rentals come with unlimited mileage, and some companies provide vehicle drop-off and pick-up services. Rates will include a 5 percent government tax and $12(USD) to $15(USD) per day for collision damage insurance. You may also need to return the car with a full tank of gas.
Travelers must secure a Grenada driving permit before taking the wheel. Permits may be obtained by providing a valid driver's license at the police station in Carenage and paying a fee of $30(EC), or $11(USD). Many rental agencies can also provide drivers with the local permit.
Drivers who take cars on parts of Grenada's 687 miles of paved roads should drive defensively and exercise caution. Drivers stay to the left-hand side of the road, and if you're not used to this, adjust to the change slowly and carefully. Seat belts are required for all passengers. Road conditions can be hazardous, and drivers should be aware of aggressive local drivers, pedestrians, drunken drivers, and thin, curving roads. Drivers should purchase a road map and avoid driving at night if possible.
