Grenada is a mountainous Caribbean island, which gives its shoreline a ragged edge. Still, its beaches are by no means inhospitable. Travelers will find many small coves and secluded beaches to explore in addition to the more popular waterfront spots.
Beaches on Grenada come in many shapes and sizes, but also in two colors. Choose between white sand or black sand beaches during your stay. The white sands are made from flakes of coral and shells that have washed ashore, while the black sands are softer and finer.
Grand Anse Beach, generally considered to be Grenada's most famous, is located near St. George's, one of the island's biggest cities. It's found on the southern coast of the island, where many of the most popular beaches are located. Another of Grenada's most popular is La Sagesse Beach. The south coast beaches are somewhat popular, and, as a result, they are lined with resorts. But Grenada's respect for the environment and its natural beauty has resulted in an unusual prohibition on all beachfront buildings. High-rises are not permitted because all buildings must be no taller than three stories, or the palm trees.
Grenada isn't just one island. The smaller islands that fall under Grenadian governance are Carriacou and Petite Martinique. On Carriacou, one of the most important beaches is L'Esterre Bay Beach. You'll only find one "beach" on Petite Martinique. It is located on the northwestern coast and is good for swimming.
The three islands that make up Grenada provide plenty of beachfront area, especially when travelers consider the small size of the country. It's important to remember that even the most crowded beaches may be secluded by Caribbean standards.
So, whether you're looking for a fun day in the water, or a bit of time enjoying the sand and sun, you'll have plenty to do among the islands that make up Grenada. To learn more about each of the beaches you'll find on these islands, visit the detailed pages found below.
